Obama +1

While Ryan is amping up his support of Obama - he set up a table outside J's elementary school this morning and handed out literature - I have decided to throw my support over to Obama as well. I am going to take P with me to early vote this evening after work.

I am sure P is too little to remember helping me vote later, but I remember going into the voting booth to help my mom vote for Jimmy Carter when I was 6. It made me feel really special and included to get to go with her... there's a secret booth! With a curtain! I will make sure that one of us take J into the booth during the general election to start his happy civic duty memories.

Dream Thoughts

We have been playing Wii Lego Star Wars at our house lately. Too much Lego Star Wars... So much so that I have been dreaming about running around and getting Lego Coins (pacman style). It's not restful, so I have called a stop to late night rounds of Wii except for the weekends. Last night, no coins. Whew.

Ryan has been dreaming of other things. The other night J came and got in bed with us at some early hour due to a nightmare. Ryan snuggled with him for a while then J got up to go back to his bed. Ryan said to him as he was leaving "Thanks for that insight into the 5th Circuit, that will help the case". Guess he's dreaming the peaceful sleep of lawyers.

Obama Fundraiser

R and I are going to the Obama fund raiser after the Texas debate tonight. I am very excited about being among more politically minded people, and to (my highest hope) glimpse the top of the candidate's head at some point.

While R has declared for Obama already, I am still undecided. I am not sure what I am waiting for, but I am trying to find out more about the candidates and come to a conclusion before March 4th.

Perhaps I will choose a candidate much the way I order dinner... narrow it down to two and then when the waiter comes, allow my sub-brain to choose for me when pressured. Admittedly not the most cerebral method, but Malcom Gladwell says there's some value to these snap decisions in "Blink".

Star Wars knowledge from waaaaay back

In a galaxy far far away, I watched Star Wars (all 6 episodes in the theater!). I watched it for entertainment value only. While there are a few quotable moments: "Damn, it impacted on the surface"; my favorite is "Luke, I am your Father", "Noooooo! Thatsimpossible!" in my best Nathan Poe imitating Mark Hamil. Makes me laugh everytime... back to my point.

I never thought I would have to be so familiar with the plot points of all the Star Wars movies later in my life. I do not remember what happened in most of the movies let alone if Boba Fett is Jango Fett's son or why Boba Fett needs to get Han Solo or the miriad of other mysteries that come up in the mind of a 3 and 5 year old who have just experienced this phenomenon for the first time.

P and I were walking into daycare the other morning and we were having an elaborate discussion about how Darth Vader had killed Anakin Skywalker, and how Anakin Skywalker AND Darth Vader were Luke Skywalker's father, etc. etc. The esoteric differenced between Vader and Anakin are surprisingly not that difficult for him to grasp. This conversation didn't strike me as that odd (since we have had so many lately) until I passed a father in hall and he started laughing quietly at our conversation.

So, you thought you were immune from the plot points of Goonies? or the Neverending Story? Barbie Island Princess? Well, study up. It's coming. You'll have to know to keep up.

A glimpse of the future

The weather here in Central Texas has been very nice this "winter". A nice change from being snowed in constantly last winter in Denver. The kids are enjoying being outside, especially on the weekends where we have taken to getting the sprinkler out.

This last weekend J. and P. were playing in the sprinkler and having a great time. Once the fun had worn off and the not-quite-warm-enough had set in, J. asked "Can I play Wii naked?"

While not exactly pre-ja-vu, I am sure this isn't the last time I will have to address this kind of question.

Rock-Paper-Scissors - Of course I was playing to win!

A few weeks ago we took the boys out for a particularly trying dinner. While they usually love Chuy's, this visit was painful for the crying and yelling about the sauce included, beans on the side, or some other culinary injustice. Our troubles with picky eaters are long running, but it was the whining which is our exhaustion-de-jour.

We had come directly from work that evening and had two cars to get home. The boys sprinted to the "Mommy" truck for the ride home. After they were safely in and buckled we closed the doors and commenced a spirited game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. After many matching rounds I was on the losing end. No discussion needed, I climbed in the truck.

As I was buckling myself in, J. says "So I guess you won Mommy!"

"Won at what, J?"

"Rock-Paper-Scissors, since you are driving us home!"
